A door that suddenly scrapes the floor, sticks at the frame, or needs a hard shove to close is usually reacting to moisture. Wood absorbs humidity, expands, and loses the small clearance it needs to swing freely. Knowing how to repair a swollen door can save you from replacing a door that is otherwise in good condition – but only if you address both the sticking edge and the moisture that caused it.
In humid climates such as Singapore, this is a frequent problem in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas, and poorly ventilated rooms. Start with a careful inspection. Removing material too quickly may make the gaps uneven once the door dries out.
First, confirm that swelling is the problem
A swollen door does not always stick in the same way. The location of the rubbing tells you what to repair. Close the door slowly and look for where it catches. You may see polished paint, scuff marks on the frame, or compressed wood fibers along the door edge.
If the door rubs at the top near the hinge side, loose or sagging hinges may be the real cause. Tighten every hinge screw before sanding or planing the door. A stripped screw hole, worn hinge, or loose frame can shift a door enough to make it scrape even when the door itself has not swollen.
If the door sticks mainly along the latch side, at the bottom, or across a broad section of the edge, moisture expansion is more likely. Check for peeling paint, dark staining, soft wood, bubbling laminate, or a musty smell. These signs can point to a leak or long-term water exposure rather than ordinary humidity.
A useful test is to run a thin piece of paper around the closed door. It should slide with light resistance. Where the paper snags or tears is where the clearance is too tight.
Find and control the moisture source
Repairing the edge without resolving moisture is a short-term fix. The door may swell again during the next wet period, especially if bare wood is left exposed.
For a bathroom door, check whether steam is escaping because the exhaust fan is weak, a window stays closed, or wet towels are kept against the door. For kitchen and laundry doors, look under nearby sinks, around washing machines, and at water pipes. A swollen entry or balcony door may be exposed to rain blowing through an opening, damaged seals, or poor drainage.
If the door is wet to the touch, visibly warped, or has recently been exposed to a leak, let it dry before trimming it. Improve airflow with a fan, ventilation, or a dehumidifier where practical. Do not use intense direct heat on one area of the door, as uneven drying can cause twisting or cracking.
Solid wood doors can usually tolerate minor swelling and careful refinishing. Hollow-core doors and particleboard doors need more caution. Once water enters their core, the material can expand permanently, crumble, or delaminate. In that case, trimming may not restore a reliable door for long.
How to repair a swollen door step by step
For a small area of rubbing, sanding is often enough. For a wider or more severe bind, a hand plane gives a cleaner and faster result. Work gradually. The goal is to restore a narrow, even gap, not to create a visibly large gap around the door.
Mark the contact area
Open the door and mark all scuffed or tight areas with a pencil. If the paint has not yet rubbed away, apply chalk or painter’s tape to the frame where you suspect contact. Close and open the door carefully. The transfer mark helps confirm the exact location.
A common mistake is removing wood from the entire edge when only one corner needs attention. That can affect the way the latch lines up with the strike plate and leave the door looking uneven.
Remove the door if more than light sanding is needed
Minor rubbing at an accessible edge can sometimes be sanded with the door in place. If you need to plane the bottom, work near the hinges, or remove more than a thin layer, take the door off its hinges and place it flat on stable supports.
Use a helper for heavy solid-core, fire-rated, glass-panel, or metal-framed doors. These doors can be awkward to control, and a damaged panel or bent hinge can turn a simple repair into a larger job. Keep the hinge pins, screws, and any spacers together so the door can be reinstalled in the same position.
Sand or plane in small passes
Use medium-grit sandpaper, around 80 to 120 grit, for a light correction. Sand in the direction of the wood grain and check your progress often. Finish with finer sandpaper, around 150 to 180 grit, to smooth the surface before painting.
When more material must be removed, use a sharp hand plane. Plane a few light passes at a time, keeping the tool level so the edge remains straight. For the bottom of an exterior or bathroom door, preserve the original slight bevel if there is one. A bevel helps the door clear the floor while maintaining a neat fit.
Test-fit the door after each round of work. Ideally, it should close without force, latch normally, and have a consistent small clearance around the frame. Avoid removing more material than necessary. Wood may shrink slightly after the humid period passes.
Seal every exposed edge
This final step is what makes the repair last. Vacuum or wipe away dust, then apply a suitable wood primer and paint to the repaired area. Use a moisture-resistant finish for doors near bathrooms, kitchens, and exterior openings.
Do not leave the top or bottom edge unfinished. These edges are often overlooked because they are less visible, yet they absorb moisture quickly. Seal the front, back, and all edges where raw wood has been exposed. Allow the finish to dry fully before rehanging or closing the door for long periods.
When sanding will not solve the problem
Some swollen doors need repair beyond simple trimming. Call a qualified handyman or door repair professional if you see rot, deep cracks, a swollen particleboard core, loose frame sections, or repeated water damage. These conditions may require rebuilding part of the frame, replacing damaged wood, correcting a leak, or installing a new door.
You should also avoid altering fire-rated doors without professional advice. In apartments, offices, and common building areas, fire doors are designed and fitted to meet specific clearance, latch, seal, and closing requirements. Excessive planing, changing hardware, or using the wrong replacement door can compromise safety and building compliance.
For tenants, document visible water damage before making major changes. A leak from a shared pipe, neighboring unit, or building exterior may be the property manager’s responsibility. A practical repair should not hide an unresolved maintenance issue.
Keep the door from swelling again
Regular ventilation and early leak repairs are the best prevention. Run bathroom exhaust fans during showers and afterward, dry standing water near doorways, and inspect plumbing connections when you notice dampness. If a room stays humid, improving airflow is more effective than repeatedly shaving the door edge.
Check painted doors once or twice a year for chips, especially along the bottom edge and near handles. Touch up damaged paint before moisture reaches the wood. Also tighten hinge screws occasionally. A door that begins to sag can mimic swelling, and fixing the hardware early is faster than refinishing the door later.
A sticking door is frustrating, but it is also useful evidence. Treat it as a signal to check humidity, ventilation, leaks, and hardware before the small problem becomes damaged flooring, a warped frame, or a door that needs full replacement.
